Abstract

The research entitled "Myths of Journalistic Photography in Disaster Reporting (Semiotics of Photos of the Palu Tsunami Disaster by Boy Slamet)" aims to reveal the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth in photojournalism of disasters. Using a constructivist paradigm and a qualitative approach, this research analyzes the meaning of photos using Roland Barthes' semiotic method, which emphasizes three stages of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. This approach allows an in-depth analysis of how Boy Slamet's photographs can shape, change and challenge public perceptions of disasters. The results of the analysis show that Boy Slamet emphasizes humanist and emotional elements in his work, presenting photos that not only document events, but also convey deep stories about humanity, resilience and spirituality. His photos make the audience feel more intensely about the situation of the disaster victims, creating a stronger sense of empathy. Boy Slamet succeeded in changing views on disaster photojournalism by emphasizing the positive aspects of human response, such as international solidarity, hope and steadfastness of faith. This research confirms the importance of a more thorough and sensitive approach in disaster photojournalism to increase audience understanding and engagement.
