Abstract

City image construction refers to the way a city is shaped, represented, and interpreted by its residents, visitors, and through the media and evolving narratives. A city's image can influence people's perceptions of the place, playing an important role in tourism, investment, and the identity of the city itself. The construction of a city's image is not just about its physical appearance, but also involves the narratives told by its residents, government agencies and the media. A good image can affect sectors such as tourism, investment and the lives of local people. In this study, the researcher will focus on examining Sidoarjo Regency Image Construction in Sidoarjo Jetis Batik. This research analyzes 4 motifs of Sidoarjo Jetis Batik including Kembang Bayam, Kembang Tebu, Beras Wutah, and Bandeng Shrimp which are constructed into the image and city branding of Sidoarjo Regency. The type of research used is qualitative with an explorative approach. The research method used in this research is the Visual Communication method by Gillian Rose which contains Site of production, Site of image, and Site of audience, each site has a modality, namely compositional modality, technological modality, and social modality. Based on the results of analysis and interviews with one of the Batik Jetis shops in Sidoarjo Regency, it was found that the four Batik Jetis motifs have characteristics that exist in Sidoarjo Regency.
