Abstract
More than just entertainment, movies can be informational, political, and propaganda. “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” is set 64 years before the first movie, following the youth of Coriolanus Snow, the ruthless President of Panem. The movie shows Snow's life at the age of 18, when his family was poverty�stricken after the war. On the other hand, the movie is rich in depictions of propaganda techniques used by the characters. This research uses descriptive qualitative method to identify propaganda techniques in the movie “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”. These techniques are analyzed based on the denotation, connotation, and mythical meanings contained in the dialogues or scenes, using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The research findings show that the movie “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” shows four propaganda techniques such as Name Calling, Glittering Generality, Plain Folk, and Testimony. By understanding the propaganda techniques used in this film, people are expected to be more critical in analyzing and processing the information they receive.
