Abstract

This study aims to compare the framing built by Viva.co.id and Okezone.com in reporting the affair between a pilot and a flight attendant that was widely discussed on social media. This research uses a qualitative approach with Robert N. Entman's framing analysis method. In this study, the researcher analyzed 5 news corpora from Viva.co.id and 5 news corpora from Okezone.com that discussed the affair of Elmer Syaherman and Bella Damaika. Robert N. Entman's framing analysis technique consists of four element dimensions: Define Problems, which examines how journalists define the problem; Diagnose Causes, which looks at how the media describes the source of the problem—who or what is the source; Make Moral Judgment, which assesses how the researcher views the framing built by the media from a moral perspective; and Treatment Recommendation, which considers how the researcher provides recommendations for problem-solving. This study uses Agenda Setting theory. Practically, this research can be useful as input or reference for media to be more objective and include the element of covering both sides in building news framing on an issue. The researcher found that both Viva.co.id and Okezone.com did not include the element of covering both sides in their reporting, and both media still included the personal opinions of journalists. The researcher also found several instances where journalists contradicted the basic principles of journalism, such as including personal information without conducting interviews or citing accurate sources.
