Abstract

The business competition in the field of event organizers prompts founders or initiators to strive to build a brand image to compete with other competitors. Surabaya Thrifting is one such event organizer operating in the thrifting sector. Surabaya Thrifting has crafted an image as the most affordable thrifting event organizer by utilizing visual communication strategies through its Instagram account. Based on this issue, this research aims to investigate the use of visual communication strategies. This study employs a descriptive research method by analyzing visual messages using visual rhetoric theory and scrutinizing the utilized visual communication strategies. Data collection methods include semi-structured interviews and observation of the Instagram account and ongoing events. The results and conclusions indicate the visual communication strategies used by Surabaya Thrifting, encompassing audience targeting planning, communication strategies employing redundancy and informativeness techniques. Visual messages emphasize visual elements such as illustrations and typography. Branding the Instagram account through available features such as Instagram Stories and Instagram feed. Additionally, in building its image, Surabaya Thrifting forges partnerships with promotional media to reach a broader audience more effectively in conveying its message.
