Abstract

Welding technology is an integral part of manufacturing technology. In welding work, attention must be paid to the suitability of the welding structure to achieve the best results. To do this, welding needs to pay attention to several important things, including welding efficiency, energy saving, and of course low costs. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) using electrode variations and welding positions on the tensile strength of ST37 steel. Testing the welding results used is by the Destructive Test method, which is in the form of tensile tests (Tensile Test). And also this research aims to fulfill the final project as a graduation requirement. This welding process is carried out using 70A and 80A welding currents. This process is useful to determine how strong the weld current that has been used by ST37 steel without changing the overall chemical composition. The method chosen in this study is an experimental method, with an experimental method, the researcher will carry out control alias control that aims to investigate possible cause and effect, and also determine variations and methods to be used. From the results of the tensile test, the highest average toughness value was 49,516 N/mm2 with a weld current of 80A with a horizontal welding position. While the extension of the test specimen that increases the most length is in 70A welding with a horizontal welding position of 14,49 %. And from the results of the Brinell hardness test the highest average value of 182.33 BHN with a welding current of 80A and a Horizontal welding position, according to the results of the study it can be concluded that the best SMAW welding position is Horizontal. According to the results of the study, it can be concluded that the best SMAW welding position is horizontal.
