Abstract

Generation Z is always connected to the virtual world, automatically the virtual world is so influential in their lives and personalities. The rapid development of technology has affected the way they communicate between individuals. As a result of this technological explosion, a new phenomenon has emerged called the fear of missing out. Especially when individuals get group influence or are called conformity which is pressure from their group to always be connected with what is happening on social media. This study aims to determine the relationship between fear of missing out and conformity in the z generation. The subjects used in this study were individuals with an age range of 19-23 years, and involved 98 respondents. The hypothesis put forward in this study is that there is a positive relationship between fear of missing out and conformity in generation z in Surabaya. Sampling in this study used a non-probability sampling technique by accidental sampling by spreading Google form. The instrument used in this study is the fear of missing out scale according to Przybylski's theory (2013) and the conformity scale according to Sears' theory (2004). The analysis technique used in this study is the product moment with a result of 0.926 with a significance of p = 0.000 <0.01. The research measurement to see the reliability of the research instrument uses the Cobach's alpha coefficient which when analyzing requires the help of SPSS (Statistic Package and Social Science) 25.0 for Windows software. The results obtained show that the hypothesis proposed by the researcher is accepted, the higher the fear of missing out, the higher the conformity of the z generation individuals. Vice versa, the higher the fear of missing out, the higher the conformity of generation z individuals.
