Abstract

The sprocket is a driving component on a motorcycle, a component that pairs directly with the chain and serves to transmit the power generated from the rotation of the engine which is connected to the chain to the rear wheel, so that it gets shock loads and friction between the chain and the sprocket teeth. The research method uses a variable load distance of use, namely 0, 100, and 250 Km on sprockets with brands X, Y, and Z. Then the specimens are tested for hardness using the Rockwell method on the HRC scale of 150 Kg, as well as XRF testing to determine the chemical elements. The results of the Rockwell hardness test showed that the sprocket with a usage distance of 0 Km had the lowest hardness value of 36.3 HRC and the highest of 65.7 HRC. The results of the X, Y, and Z sprocket XRF tests for manganese (Mn) and chromium (Cr) elements had a sequential percentage of 0.28; 0.93 ; 0.96% and 0.21 ; 1.39 ; 1.47 %. The content of manganese and chromium elements in sprocket X is less when compared to sprocket Y, and Z. It is proven that the hardness value of sprocket X is lower than sprocket Y, and Z. When the load is 250 Km, sprocket X experiences a significant increase in hardness value of 68.2 HRC. Sprockets Y and Z which contain more manganese (Mn) and chromium (Cr) than sprocket X, from the start without loading to 250Km loading have high hardness values but are stable until the end of the test. From the results of the study it was concluded that the number of elements contained in each material, especially alloy steel, will affect its mechanical properties, including hardness, strength, ductility, wear resistance, and ability to work at high temperatures.
