Abstract

Electric arc welding or often called electric welding is a metal joining process using electricity as a heat source. Electric arc welding techniques with covered electrodes have been widely used in joining rods in steel building construction and machine construction. Welding is a medium for achieving efficient and effective construction design goals. Thus, welding construction and welding methods must pay attention to the consistency between the mechanical and physical properties of the welded object with the advantages of the construction. The method to be used in this study is welding using SMAW by varying the seam angle V and current strength using SS 400 steel. The seam angle V to be varied is 70°, 80°, 90° and the current strength to be used is 80A, 90A, 100A with the first E 7018 electrode for collecting specimen data, where the data collected or studied is used as a guide in research. Second, the status method where the selected sample will be analyzed for its characteristics then the results of the welding are tested for tensile strength, microstructure and weld defects. And the third is the evaluation method, where the data obtained is evaluated to get maximum results. The results of the tensile test on SS 400 steel show that the variation of seam angle V 70° yields the highest strength value, with a current strength of 100A and an average maximum stress value of 52.29 kg/mm2, and the variation of seam angle V 80 ° yields the lowest stress value, with a current strength of 90A and an average maximum voltage value of 44.01 kg/mm2. Similar to the microstructure test, the value of the calculation of the grain size in the weld metal area with the maximum grain size number value is 11.2 with a grain dimension of 0.0112 mm at the corner of the V seam 80° current strength 90A. At the corner of the V 70° seam with a current of 100A, the smallest grain size is 6.7 with a grain diameter of 0.0067 mm.
