Abstract

Corrosion is an event of destruction or degradation of metal materials due to chemical reactions in their environment. Corrosion is one of the most important considerations in selecting fabrication materials, because corrosion can cause losses. Steel is an alloy metal, iron metal as a basic element with several other elements, including carbon steel. ST 41 steel is able to withstand a tensile strength of 41 kgf/mm², with the elements carbon 0.1517%, silicon 0.1994%, manganese 0.5631%, phosphorus 0.0224%, and sulfur 0.047%. The properties possessed by ST 41 steel are having fairly high strength, sufficient hardness values, and good dimensional stability. Because it has the properties mentioned above, ST 41 steel is widely used in shafts, plunger pins, camshafts, spring pins, and others. This study aims to determine the effect of various cooling media on the corrosion rate of ST 41 steel with seawater, river water, and H2SO4 corrosion media and to determine the effect of variations of corrosion media on ST 41 steel on the corrosion rate. This study uses weight loss testing or testing by calculating the initial weight of the specimen material and calculating the final weight of the specimen. The specimens used heat treatment with a temperature of 900°C and a holding time of 30 minutes, the specimens were then placed in a cooling medium of oil, bimoli oil, and water. The specimens were immersed in seawater, river water, and H2SO4 corrosion media for 21 days (504 hours) and the corrosion rates were determined. The best corrosion rate was in the cooling medium for oil and bimoli oil with seawater and H2SO4 corrosion media with an average corrosion rate of 0.1517 mm/y.
