Abstract

In the rapidly evolving digital era, social media platforms like Instagram have become essential means for individuals to build their self-image. Visually impaired individuals also utilize Instagram as a platform to shape their self-image within society. This research aims to delve into the process of self-image formation for visually impaired individuals through the use of Instagram. The research methodology includes content analysis of posts, exploration of relevant hashtags, and interviews with visually impaired individuals who are active on Instagram. The findings of this research indicate that visually impaired individuals use Instagram to express their identities and diversities, reinforce independence and self-worth, and promote inclusion and social awareness. They share personal experiences, achievements, and daily activities through inspiring photos, videos, and stories. In shaping their self-image, visually impaired individuals also interact with other users, including followers and similar communities. They make use of Instagram's accessibility features, such as image descriptions and alternative texts, to enhance content accessibility for users with visual disabilities. This research provides important insights into the role of Instagram in the formation of self-image for visually impaired individuals. The results can be used to enhance societal understanding of the lives and challenges faced by visually impaired individuals, as well as to promote inclusion and equality within social media platforms.
