Abstract

Welding is a process of joining two or more metal materials by melting some of the parent metal. Today welding cannot be separated in the metal joining process because welding has an important function in the design industry. Along with the times, welding technology has experienced rapid development. The discovery of new methods to overcome problems in the process of joining materials is an indication of developments in welding technology. One of them is friction welding. In friction welding, the process of joining the metal without melting (solid state process) in which the welding process occurs as a result of combining the rotation rates of one of the rotating workpieces. The friction caused by the meeting of the two workpieces will produce heat which can melt the two ends of the workpiece which are rubbing together so that they are able to melt and finally a joining process occurs. The parameters that affect the strength of the connection are the cross-sectional area of the test object, the rotational speed, the friction time, and the applied compressive force. This research was conducted to determine the tensile strength and buckling strength of the welded joint, as well as to determine the microstructural changes that occur in the ST 42 steel material due to friction in the rotary friction welding process using the rotational speed parameters of 1200, 1000 and 800 rpm. , 12 mm in diameter, the friction time varies from 20 to 30 seconds. as well as the results of microstructural testing there is embrittlement in the weld joint area..
