Abstract

As internet technology advances, social media also grows and develops rapidly. The rapid development of technology is directly proportional to the emergence of new media platforms to pamper its users. The impact and impact of all this is that conventional media is starting to lag behind in capturing public interest. Reception analysis is the process of analyzing the meaning that the audience makes after being exposed to a broadcast. Reception analysis is offered by Stuart Hall in a paper entitled Encoding and Decoding Television Discourse (1973). The reception theory states that even though a film, book, or game does not have an inherent meaning, the audience who watches or experiences it will make meaning. The audience tries to understand the events or messages displayed or other communication messages, as quoted by the author as follows: "It is unnecessary that the audience will decode the message encoded by the author just the same" (Hall, 1973). The benefit of this research is that hopefully it can be used as reference material to then be used as a reference for research. As well as being able to contribute to the development of insights in the field of communication science, especially in the aspect of audience interpretation of media messages. The researcher wants to know the audience's reception of the Dear Stranger Web Series, that since its launch on the TrueId platform, the audience's appeal has been proven by the Dear Stranger web series which has reached 1 million. The methodology used in this study is qualitative with the encoding and decoding reception approach by Stuart Hall. It was found that the three informants accepted negotiated positions. Then there are two informants for the dominant hegemonic position. None of the five informants interviewed by the researcher were in an oppositional position.
