Abstract

Figurative language is used to express something beyond the literal meaning. This study discussed an analysis of the figurative language in the Florence and The Machine song’s lyrics. This study emphasizes the use of figurative language and meaning in the lyrics of the album Lungs by Florence and The Machine. This study’s purposes are: (1) to describe the types of figurative languages found in the album Lungs by Florence and The Machine and (2) to figure the predominant type of figurative languages found in album Lungs by Florence and The Machine. The data source was taken from the lyrics of the Florence and The Machine song lyric from the album Lungs. This study employed the descriptive qualitative model. In the analysis, the technique was started by listening to the song and reading the lyrics. Second, the researcher sought to identify words, lines, and phrases that involved figurative language and catch each figurative language's context. Then, the researcher took record about the figurative language found in the lyrics. Finally, the researchers classified and re-checked the details. The next step was the discussion of each category's results. The last step was drawing conclusions based on the report. The finding consists of 119 (one hundred and nineteen) figurative languages. The analysis data showed twelve types of figurative language found in the lyrics of this song. The types are metaphors, hyperbole, idiomatic expressions, simile, personification, metonymy, rhetorical question, meiosis, sarcasm, indirect request, contextual metaphor, and irony. The predominant type of figurative language is idiomatic expression.
