Abstract

MIG ( Metal Inert Gas ) welding process is the heat from a welding process generated by the welding are formed between the workpiece and the wire electrode . This study analyzes the effect of MIG ( Metal Inert Gas ) welding results on variations in welding currents of 15 A , 20 A and 25 A on changes in tensile and hardness mechanical properties and changes in microstructure . The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of variations in MIG ( Metal ) welding current . Inert Gas ) to changes in tensile and hardness mechanical properties and changes in microstructure . The material to be tested in this research is ASTM A106 carbon steel pipe material with a material thickness of 8 mm . The MIG ( Metal Inert Gas ) welding process with a current variation of 15 A , 20 A and 25 A is carried out by means of two welding with the same current variation as the 1G welding position . The results of the tensile test obtained the highest maximum tensile strength value of 46.12 kg / mm2 , then the lowest value obtained was 43.75 kg / mm2 . For hardness testing , the mean highest value is 59.3 HRC on 25 A specimen , then the lowest value obtained is 56.9 HRC on 15 A specimen . For changes in microstructure , the largest percentage of ferrite is 42 % in 25 A specimen , then the lowest value is 40 % on specimen 15 A focus in weld metal . This shows that the variation of current in MIG ( Metal Inert Gas ) welding greatly affects the microstructure of the material so that it also affects the value of tensile strength and strain as well as the strength of the material's hardness . tensile strength value , the lower the hardness value , the higher the maximum tensile strength value produced , the greater the welding current , the greater the toughness of the ASTM A106 material as a result of MIG ( Metal Inert Gas ) welding .
