Abstract
Welding is widely used in the implementation of building construction work, vehicles, machinery and other engineering work. Besides its very wide use, the welding process also has an effect on the material, namely the emergence of residual stress due to the effects of heat and uneven cooling rates. Residual stress can affect the mechanical properties of a material. One way to free the residual stress is by means of Post Weld Heat Treatment. In this study using SMAW welding with a welding position of 1G. PWHT using normalizing method with temperature variations used are 900oC, 925oC, 950oC and holding time 10,20,30 minutes. The tests were carried out using the Charpy impact test, the Rockwell C hardness test and the microstructure test. From the results of research that has been carried out, variations in temperature and holding time of PWHT can affect the mechanical properties and microstructure of ST 41 steel. The impact test results show that the PWHT sample at 925oC holding time 10 minutes has the highest impact value from several samples of other test variations, which is 3.53 j/mm2 which is tougher and more ductile than the sample without PWHT 2.19 j/mm2. While the hardness test has the opposite value, the sample without PWHT has the highest hardness value from several samples of other test variations, which is 53.17 HRC so that it is hard but brittle. The microstructure test shows that the longer holding time at each temperature variation will tend to increase the percentage of pearlite phase, while with a shorter holding time will tend to increase the percentage of ferrite phase. Where the higher the percentage of the pearlite phase, the material will be hard but brittle, while the higher the percentage of the ferrite phase the material will be tough and ductile.
