Abstract

This research is about psychopathic tendencies portrayed in Berlin Syndrome. In conducting this research, the writer chose Melanie Joosten's Berlin Syndrome novel because the writer was interested in Andi's psychopathy which is a different and unusual behavior. This research aims to determine the psychopathic tendencies practiced by Andi and to find out the impact of Andi's psychopaths on his life and Clare's life. In conducting the research, the qualitative method and psychoanalytic approach are applied. The result of the analysis shows Andi's psychopathic tendencies are included in the malevolent and superficial charm psychopathic types. The impact of Andi's psychopaths occurred on his life and Clare's life. The tendency from a type of malevolent psychopaths can be seen from Andi's behavior when he forces Clare to engage in sexual activity. While the tendency of superficial charm can be seen in Andi makes Clare interested in and fascinated. This type of superficially charming psychopath tends to spread charm so that someone is attracted to it. The conclusion of this research is that Andi's psychopathic tendencies belongs to the type of malevolent psychopathy and superficially charming psychopath and the causes of Andi's psychopathic tendencies is a traumatic tragedy happened during his childhood when his mother left him and only his father took care of him. The incident caused a personality disorder until he became an adult, and it affected on Andi's life and Clare's life. Keywords: Psychopathic Tendencies, Psychopathy, Superficial, Malevolent.
