Abstract

Shallow groundwater is one of the water sources widely utilized by communities to meet their daily needs. However, groundwater quality may deteriorate due to domestic activities and the presence of pollution sources surrounding residential areas. This study aims to analyze the quality of shallow groundwater as a raw water source using the Sturges Scoring and Pollution Index (PI) methods, as well as to map its spatial distribution in Tambak Sari Hamlet RT 03 RW 02, Tambak Rejo Village, Waru District, Sidoarjo Regency using ArcGIS 10.8. This research employed a quantitative descriptive method with six active dug wells as sampling points. The analyzed parameters included pH, nitrate (NO₃⁻), nitrite (NO₂⁻), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn). The results showed that pH values ranged from 7.0 to 7.2, nitrate concentrations ranged from 5 to 12 mg/L, nitrite concentrations ranged from <0.02 to 0.30 mg/L, and iron (Fe) concentrations complied with the quality standards established by the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 2 of 2023. Meanwhile, manganese (Mn) concentrations ranged from 0.004 to 0.900 mg/L, with three wells exceeding the maximum allowable limit of 0.1 mg/L.Based on the Sturges Scoring method, all wells were classified as suitable for use as raw water sources. Based on the Pollution Index (PI) method, three wells met the water quality standards, while the other three were classified as lightly polluted. Spatial mapping results indicated the presence of both compliant and lightly polluted zones within the study area. The decline in groundwater quality was mainly influenced by elevated manganese (Mn) concentrations. Therefore, the Pollution Index method was considered more sensitive than the Sturges Scoring method in detecting groundwater pollution.
