Turnitin Untag_Analysis of the Effect of Bucket Width and Valve Opening on the Performance of a Microhydro Pelton Turbine.pdf Restricted to Repository staff only Download (2MB) | Request a copy |
Abstract
The increasing demand for energy has encouraged the development of environmentally friendly renewable energy sources, one of which is hydropower through Micro Hydropower Plant (MHP) systems. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of bucket number, nozzle diameter, bucket width, and valve opening on the performance of a microhydro Pelton turbine. The performance parameters investigated include turbine rotational speed, turbine output power, hydraulic power, and turbine efficiency. An experimental method was employed using variations of bucket numbers of 19, 22, and 25; nozzle diameters of 9 mm, 12 mm, and 15 mm; bucket widths of 44 mm, 48 mm, and 52 mm; and valve openings of 3 turns, S turns, and fully open conditions. The observed parameters included water discharge, turbine rotational speed, voltage, and electric current generated by the generator. The results indicate that increasing the bucket number, bucket width, and valve opening generally improves turbine rotational speed and power output. Conversely, a smaller nozzle diameter produces a higher jet velocity, resulting in enhanced turbine performance. The optimum operating condition was achieved with 25 buckets, a 9 mm nozzle diameter, a 52 mm bucket width, and a fully open valve, which provided the best turbine performance. The study concludes that optimizing bucket design and water flow regulation significantly affects the efficiency and overall performance of a microhydro Pelton turbine.
