Abstract
Propeller is an important component in the propulsion system of unmanned fast ships (Unmanned Surface Vehicle/USV) which demands high casting quality and minimizes defects. The Investment casting method (lost resin casting) was chosen because it is able to produce complex shapes with good dimensional accuracy, but still has the potential to cause casting defects such as porosity and shrinkage. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in vacuum pressure and the number of patterns on casting defects in the investment casting process of propellers made of Aluminum 6061. The vacuum pressure variations used were 0.4 bar, 0.6 bar, and 0.8 bar with the number of patterns 1, 2, and 3 in one series. The patterns were made using SLA 3D printing technology made of resin. Evaluation of the quality of the castings was carried out through shrinkage testing, density testing, surface roughness testing and Non-Destructive Test (NDT) visual and dye penetrant methods. The results of the study showed that at a vacuum pressure of 0.4 bar, gas cavity porosity defects and low density values still existed in pattern 1, pattern 2, and pattern 3. As the vacuum pressure increased to 0.8 bar in pattern 3, the defects decreased, and the density value increased to 2.42 gr/cm3. Thus, the vacuum pressure parameters and the number of patterns influenced casting defects.
