Abstract

This study examines the organizational communication patterns used to build member solidarity during hiking activities within the PATAGA (Pecinta Alam 17 Agustus) community at the University of 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya. Organizational communication plays a crucial role in fostering coordination, cooperation, and mutual trust among members, especially in challenging field situations such as mountain climbing. Under extreme conditions, communication is carried out not only verbally but also through nonverbal and empathetic forms such as hand signals, eye contact, or helping actions which serve as key means to maintain safety and strengthen group solidarity. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study method to gain an in-depth understanding of the organizational communication processes within the context of hiking activities. Data were collected through interviews, direct observation, and activity documentation. The findings reveal that nonverbal communication and empathy play vital roles in fostering solidarity among PATAGA members; empathy is reflected in concrete actions such as assisting struggling teammates, adjusting one’s pace to match others, and offering motivation in difficult terrain, while nonverbal communication helps maintain coordination and create a sense of togetherness without the need for many words. In conclusion, effective organizational communication patterns particularly nonverbal and empathetic communication—are key to forming social solidarity during hiking activities, emphasizing that communication is not merely a tool for conveying messages but also a medium for strengthening emotional bonds and shared values among members. This study is expected to contribute theoretically to organizational communication studies and provide practical benefits for student organizations and other team-based communities.
