Abstract

This study aims to explore the lived experiences of Communication Science students at UNTAG Surabaya in engaging in romantic oversharing through WhatsApp Stories. This phenomenon is relevant because WhatsApp is one of the most widely used communication platforms in Indonesia, and its Stories feature is perceived as a semi private space that allows selective emotional expression. However, the blurred boundary between private and public spheres often leads to oversharing, potentially impacting users’ interpersonal relationships and self-image. This research employs a qualitative phenomenological approach with three main informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, digital observation, and documentation. The analysis follows Moustakas’ (1994) transcendental phenomenology, including epoche, horizontalization, clustering of meaning, and the development of textural and structural descriptions to reveal the essence of participants’ experiences. The findings reveal that romantic oversharing is driven by emotional release, the need for social validation, and indirect communication strategies directed at partners or ex-partners. WhatsApp Stories are perceived as a safe and private medium with controllable audiences, although the boundaries of privacy are not always consistently managed. Forms of oversharing include emotional texts, indirect messages, song lyrics, quotes, photos, and other symbolic expressions. Based on Communication Privacy Management theory, students attempt to regulate their privacy boundaries but frequently experience boundary turbulence, such as regret, conflict, or misunderstanding after posting. From the perspective of self-disclosure, oversharing reflects emotional needs and relational dynamics that encourage openness in digital spaces. This study concludes that romantic oversharing is not merely impulsive behavior but a meaningful digital communication practice. WhatsApp Stories function as a space for emotional regulation, identity expression, and social support. Nonetheless, enhancing digital privacy literacy is essential to minimize potential negative consequences.
