Abstract

The phenomenon of love scams through dating apps demonstrates that digital space is not only a means of building relationships but also a medium for communication manipulation. Women as users of dating apps are often in a vulnerable position due to the emotional involvement built through symbolic interactions in the digital space. This study aims to understand the communication experiences of female love scam victims in Surabaya in interpreting the digital interpersonal communication process they undergo with the perpetrators. This study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. The research subjects consisted of three female users of the dating apps Tinder, Bumble, and Tantan who have direct experience as victims of love scams. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted by exploring the informants' lived experiences to discover the meaning and essence of the victims' experiences, which were then analyzed using symbolic interaction theory. The results show that the informants' use of dating apps stems from different social and emotional needs, such as limited social interaction, feelings of loneliness, and workload. During the communication process, perpetrators build closeness through digital symbols such as intense attention, empathy, shared interests, and a convincing self-image. These symbols are interpreted by victims as a form of sincerity and trust, which the perpetrators ultimately exploit to carry out sexual, emotional, and financial manipulation. This study found that the experience of love scams results in a change in the meaning of digital relationships, a loss of trust, and psychological impacts such as trauma and hypervigilance in online interactions. This research confirms that love scams are the result of a systematically manipulated symbolic communication process. Therefore, understanding victims' experiences is important as a basis for strengthening digital literacy and awareness of safe communication in the digital space.
