Abstract

Load balancing is a crucial technique in microservices system development for maintaining service performance and reliability during traffic spikes. This study compares two load balancing methods—Round Robin and Least Connection—across eight test tasks involving six backend endpoints, including two "double-hit" scenarios representing complex workloads. Testing involved sending 100, 500, and 1000 requests, with performance measured based on average response time, fastest and slowest response times, total execution time, and throughput. The results indicate that the Round Robin method exhibits greater instability, with a difference between maximum and minimum response times exceeding 2.7 seconds. In contrast, the Least Connection method demonstrates more stable performance, with a response time variance (maximum minus minimum) of less than 0.4 seconds and shorter total execution times under heavy loads. Under light to moderate workloads, both methods show relatively similar performance regarding response time and throughput. These findings demonstrate that Least Connection is more consistent in maintaining stable response times and throughput, particularly when handling high traffic and uneven loads. Consequently, Least Connection is better suited for dynamic systems, whereas Round Robin remains a viable option for light-load conditions with balanced traffic.
