Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between trait anger and intensity of social media use with verbal aggressiveness in Gen Z social media users in Surabaya, both simultaneously and partially, involving 111 participants selected through purposive sampling from among Generation Z who actively use social media and make posts on Instagram or TikTok. The results of the analysis show that trait anger and intensity of social media use simultaneously have a significant effect on verbal aggressiveness, evidenced by the F test significance value of 0.000 and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 64.9%, which means that both variables together explain 64.9% of the variation in verbal aggressive behavior. Partially, trait anger has a positive and significant effect on verbal aggressiveness, indicating that the higher the trait anger, the greater the tendency of individuals to display verbally aggressive behavior; meanwhile, the intensity of social media use also has a positive and significant effect on verbal aggressiveness. These findings support the three research hypotheses and emphasize the importance of emotional management and healthy social media use to suppress the potential for verbal aggressive behavior among Gen Z.
