Abstract

The "Marriage is Scary" phenomenon, widely discussed on social media, reflects a growing level of premarital anxiety among emerging adults. This anxiety is often triggered by excessive exposure to negative content about marriage and unrealistic social expectations formed through social media. On the other hand, a person’s ability to treat themselves kindly (self-compassion) can help reduce this anxiety. This study aims to examine the relationship between the intensity of social media use and self-compassion with premarital anxiety in emerging adults. Using a quantitative correlational method, this research involved 373 participants. The instruments used were the Premarital Anxiety Scale, the Social Media Use Intensity Scale, and the Self-Compassion Scale each developed based on relevant theoretical frameworks. The results showed a significant relationship between social media use intensity and self- compassion with premarital anxiety. The higher the intensity of social media use, the higher the level of premarital anxiety; conversely, the higher the self- compassion, the lower the anxiety experienced. These findings highlight the importance of media literacy, so individuals can filter out negative content, and the development of self-compassion as a strategy to manage premarital anxiety. This approach may help emerging adults deal with social pressures and complex expectations around marriage in a healthier and more realistic way.
