Abstract

The issue addressed in this study is the continued tendency among university students in Surabaya to exhibit an intention to engage in corrupt behavior, which is suspected to be influenced by the level of moral identity, with moral disengagement acting as a mediating variable. This study aims to examine the relationship between moral identity and intention to corruption, and to explore the mediating role of moral disengagement in order to understand the psychological processes that may lead individuals to justify corrupt intentions despite possessing a strong moral identity. The study involved 350 active university students as participants. Data analysis was conducted using mediation analysis through PROCESS Macro model 4 by Hayes. The results showed that moral identity had a positive and significant relationship with intention to corruption, with a regression coefficient of 0.203 and a significance level of p < 0.001. The mediation test revealed that moral disengagement significantly mediated the relationship between moral identity and intention to corruption, indicating that moral disengagement plays a crucial role in explaining increased corruption intentions among students, even those with high levels of moral identity.
