Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between emotional maturity and social support with self-adjustment among women involved in the traditional practice of kawin tangkap (Pitti Rambang) in Sumba Island. This custom imposes substantial psychological and social challenges, making it important to explore the factors influencing women’s adaptive capacity. The research employed a quantitative correlational approach. The participants were women who had directly experienced kawin tangkap, selected using purposive sampling. Measurement tools included emotional maturity scales, social support scales, and self-adjustment scales. Statistical analysis using Pearson correlation revealed a significant positive relationship between emotional maturity and self-adjustment (r = 0.628; p < 0.01), as well as between social support and self-adjustment (r = 0.587; p < 0.01). Furthermore, multiple regression analysis showed that emotional maturity and social support jointly contributed significantly to self-adjustment (R² = 0.521; F = 24.138; p < 0.01). These findings underscore the critical role of emotional maturity and social support in assisting women to cope with the psychological burdens imposed by restrictive cultural traditions. This study is expected to serve as a basis for designing culturally adaptive psychosocial interventions to improve the well-being of women in indigenous communities.
