Abstract

ASTM A36 steel is a type of structural steel widely used in building construction and shipbuilding due to its excellent formability, weldability, and adequate mechanical strength. This study aims to evaluate the effect of normalizing heat treatment and sandblasting on the mechanical properties of ASTM A36 steel, particularly its hardness and surface roughness. The normalizing process was carried out at three temperature variations: 850°C, 870°C, and 900°C, with a holding time of 20 minutes. It was then followed by sandblasting at 7 bar pressure for durations of 10, 15, and 20 seconds. Surface roughness was measured using the Elcometer 122 instrument, while hardness was tested using the Rockwell (HRC) method. The results showed that the treatment at 870°C with sandblasting for 15 seconds produced the highest hardness value of 51.5 HRC, whereas the lowest hardness of 43.3 HRC occurred at 850°C with 20 seconds of sandblasting. The surface roughness ranged from 11.0 µm to 11.8 µm, indicating that sandblasting duration significantly affects surface roughness, while the influence of normalizing temperature on roughness is relatively minor. In conclusion, the combination of normalizing at 870°C and sandblasting for 15 seconds is considered the most optimal condition to improve surface hardness without excessively increasing roughness. This study provides a reference for effective thermomechanical treatment to enhance the surface quality of ASTM A36 steel in engineering and construction applications.
