Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between self-compassion and social support with loneliness in late adolescents. The population in this study were all new overseas students in Surabaya with an age range of 18-21 years. The research subjects amounted to 183 students selected by insidential sampling technique. This study uses a quantitative approach with multiple correlation analysis techniques. The research instruments were a loneliness scale developed based on the UCLA Loneliness Scale (Russell, 1996), a self- compassion scale (Neff, 2003), and a social support scale (Sarafino, 2011). The results of this study indicate that self-compassion and social support together have no significant relationship with loneliness with a significance value of p> 0.05. The results of partial hypothesis testing show that there is a significant negative relationship between self-compassion and loneliness with an estimated value of β = -0.376, p < 0.001. In addition, social support also shows a significant negative relationship with loneliness with an estimated value of β = -0.415, p < 0.001. This means that the higher self-compassion and social support that late adolescents have, the lower the level of loneliness felt individually. This research is expected to be the basis for the development of intervention programs to help overseas students reduce loneliness through increasing self-compassion and social support.
