Abstract
This study examines the social dynamics of the sandwich generation phenomenon through a narrative analysis of the film Home Sweet Loan, using Tzvetan Todorov’s narrative theory, which focuses on three main stages: initial equilibrium, disruption, and new equilibrium. The aim of this research is to understand how the film represents the complex social reality of individuals who bear a dual burden both financially and emotionally for their parents and children. In the initial equilibrium stage, the film portrays Kaluna as the family's breadwinner, carrying emotional and financial burdens, reflecting the social role imbalance commonly found in Indonesia. The disruption occurs when Kaluna experiences emotional and physical strain from these responsibilities, depicted through role conflicts, economic pressures (such as demands for electricity tokens and investment offers), and a lack of family support. These tensions are heightened by incidents such as Kaluna’s room being reassigned without consent and the use of the house certificate as collateral for an online loan by her sibling. Ultimately, the new equilibrium stage shows Kaluna making a conscious decision to restructure the family dynamics, redistribute responsibilities, and reorganize her life. This represents a social transformation toward more equitable and proportional collaboration. The film effectively narrates the social dynamics of the sandwich generation and serves as a medium of mass communication that enables a reinterpretation of this phenomenon in Indonesian society.
