Abstract

One of the factors in improving the community's economy is through sustainable development. As an effort to create sustainable development is to reduce pollution resulting from construction activities. The construction industry is one of the contributors to carbon dioxide emissions on earth so that the use of recycled materials is starting to be emphasized. This study will discuss the utilization of carbide waste. Carbide waste can be obtained from the production of acetylene gas used in the welding industry. Carbide waste is B3 waste so it should not be careless in its processing. One of the elements in carbide waste is CaO. This element has potential in the cement binding process and can increase compressive strength. Therefore, carbide waste can be used in cement substitute materials in the concrete making process, which can reduce CO2 emissions due to reactions in the cement making process. This study used carbide waste as a cement substitute with a percentage of 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% of the weight of the cement. The results of cement testing showed that the higher the content of carbide waste mixture in cement, the faster the cement binding process. Testing the consistency of mortar with the addition of carbide waste showed no difference with the consistency of normal mortar. The content of carbide waste in mortar also increases the mortar unit weight compared to normal mortar. The compressive strength test results show that the carbide waste content at a percentage of 7.5% has the highest compressive strength with a value of 29,430 MPa at 28 days and will decrease if the percentage exceeds 7.5%. Water absorption data showed that the higher the carbide waste content, the higher the water absorption value, so that mortar with a mixture of carbide waste is more likely to lose water compared to normal mortar.
