Abstract
Grebeg Suro is a sacred moment that marks the Javanese New Year in the month of Suro in Ponorogo. This tradition is filled with traditional processions that are full of spiritual meaning and local culture, especially the Reog Ponorogo art. This study aims to analyze the tourism communication strategy through the Reog Festival in an effort to strengthen Ponorogo's city branding as a cultural tourism city related to the theory of city branding. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study are that Disbudparpora has succeeded in implementing a tourism communication strategy by referring to three indicators developed by Mihalis Kavaratzis. The form of implementation of Disbudparpora's tourism communication strategy is by preparing good infrastructure before or during Grebeg Suro, a social media platform that presents entertainment content and information related to Grebeg Suro, and also involving local artists, cultural communities, MSMEs, and other tourism actors. The peak of this festival is realized through two main activities, namely the Youth Reog Festival (FRR) and the National Reog Ponorogo Festival (FNRP), which are symbols of the celebration and preservation of Reog culture. These two activities are not only an art performance event, but also the closing of the Grebeg Suro series of events, as well as strengthening Ponorogo's identity as a cultural city.
