Abstract

This study discusses the representation of power relations in the Scandal (2021) series with a focus on the character "Ayu". This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic approach to analyze visual and verbal cues in scenes that represent power dynamics, and integrates Stuart Hall's theory of representation and Michel Foucault's theory of power relations as theoretical foundations. The results of the analysis show that Ayu's character is represented as a female subject who experiences institutional domination through various forms of symbolic control, such as changing the name to "Angel", the elimination of the right to personal decisions, and the pressure of professionalism that overrides personal interests. Institutional power works not only repressively, but also productively—shaping identities, values, and consciousness of figures through media representation. The cultural myths featured in the series portray women as visual commodities controlled by patriarchal and capitalistic systems. This representation does not merely reflect reality, but produces meanings that reinforce gender power inequality. The figure of Ayu is a symbol of how women in the entertainment industry are reduced to institutional objects, with their resistance framed as a form of unprofessionalism. This research shows that Scandal (2021) not only presents an entertainment drama, but also contains an ideological narrative about women's power and subordination in the popular culture space.
