Abstract

This study aims to analyze how students of the University of 17 August 1945 Surabaya interpret the political messages in the video “Pada Dasarnya, Karya Seni Itu Politis!” published by the Narasi Newsroom YouTube channel. The research problem focuses on the forms of student reception toward art content containing socio-political criticism and to what extent the video shapes political awareness. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using Stuart Hall’s reception theory as the analytical framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four informants from different academic backgrounds. The findings show that students demonstrate diverse positions of reception: dominant, negotiated, and oppositional. Most students accept the message of the video and acknowledge the role of art as a medium of political expression. The conclusion of this research is that digital media such as YouTube can be an effective tool to increase students' political awareness, depending on their academic background and level of media literacy.
