Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the interpersonal communication patterns between teachers and children with Down Syndrome in the POTADS Surabaya community. These communication patterns play a crucial role in the learning process, social interaction, and emotional development of children with special needs. The study is based on the theories of Symbolic Interactionism (George H. Mead) and Uncertainty Reduction (Charles Berger) to understand the dynamics of the communication that takes place. The research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The subjects consist of three educators at POTADS Surabaya: Bu Endah (Qur’an teacher and parent), Kak Tomi (angklung music coach), and Pak Erwin (sports trainer). Data were collected through direct observation and in-depth interviews during the researcher’s six-month involvement in the community. The data analysis process involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the interpersonal communication used by the teachers involves simple verbal language, body gestures, facial expressions, and emotionally empathetic approaches. The communication strategies are adjusted to suit the characteristics of each child and the type of activity. This study emphasizes that consistent, open, and meaningful communication strengthens interpersonal relationships and helps children with Down Syndrome build self confidence, understand instructions, and develop their social and emotional skills.
