Abstract
This study aims to understand how the process of social penetration occurs in arranged marriages within Islamic boarding school (pesantren) environments. The background of this research stems from the phenomenon of matchmaking, which remains common among santri (Islamic boarding school students), where couples have limited time to get to know each other before marriage. This condition poses challenges in building open and deep interpersonal communication. The primary theoretical frameworks used in this study are the Social Penetration Theory by Altman and Taylor and the Johari Window model, which are applied to explore the dynamics of self-disclosure in marital relationships. This study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four female santri who entered marriage through matchmaking. The data were analyzed using the stages of the social penetration process: orientation, exploratory affective exchange, affective exchange, and stable exchange. The findings reveal that the marital relationships of arranged couples develop through gradual communication processes, beginning with awkwardness and limited interaction, eventually progressing toward deeper and more comfortable openness. Several factors influence the success of the social penetration process, including religious values and pesantren norms, family support, character compatibility between partners, and the presence of routine, supportive communication such as pillow talk. This research contributes to the study of interpersonal communication within the pesantren cultural context and provides practical insights for arranged couples, families, and Islamic educational institutions in fostering healthy communication environments that support the growth of intimacy in marriage.
