Abstract
This research examines the fashion trend of dressing well as a manifestation of the fear of missing out (FOMO) phenomenon that is developing among the 2021 Communication Studies students at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation of Instagram accounts, interviews, and documentation of seven students who follow the dress well fashion trend. The data obtained will be analyzed through phenomenological data analysis (FDA) to categorize and simplify the findings. As an effort to obtain data validity, the researcher used source triangulation and Jean Baudrillard's theory of consumer society to examine the sign value in the trend. The research results show that Communication Science students at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya who follow the dress well fashion trend reflect that FOMO is not always explicitly acknowledged, but can be seen from the underlying purpose. The trend is not only interpreted as a neat and attractive style of dressing, but has also become a part of showing students' identities in social and digital spaces, especially on the social media platform Instagram to gain social validation. This phenomenon indicates that the dress well fashion trend uploaded by students on Instagram is part of the visual consumerism culture system. Therefore, it can be concluded that the dress well fashion trend has become a form of sign value consumption for the self image formation of students in social and digital spaces.
