Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe how the representation of lesbian homosexual identity is displayed in the series Sianida on the WeTV platform. The focus of this research is on the main characters, Amelia and Jenny, and how their romantic relationships are constructed through visual cues, dialogue, and storylines that depict non-heteronormative gender identities. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive type of research. Data was obtained through primary sources in the form of Sianida series and secondary sources in the form of theoretical references and related literature. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation of visuals and narratives in the series, as well as documentation of relevant scenes and dialogues. The data analysis used Roland Barthes' semiotic method with a three-stage approach of meaning (denotation, connotation and myth), and supported by Stuart Hall's theory of representation and Judith Butler's theory of gender identity. The findings of this study show that lesbian homosexual identities in the Sianida series are represented through visual cues such as touch, emotional expression, and romantic interactions that build the meaning of same-sex relationships in an implicit but consistent manner. In addition, this series also displays the dynamics of inner conflict, social rejection, and family tension which shows the reality faced by lesbians in Indonesian society. This representation is a form of media negotiation that brings an alternative discourse between the portrayal of gender identity diversity that has been marginalized by society and the media with social norms that are still dominant in Indonesia.
