Abstract

This study applies Sara Mills’ critical discourse analysis to examine CNN Indonesia converage of the rape and murder of an intern doctor in India. The focus is on the formation of the image of the victim and perpetrator through narrative,diction, and subject-object positions and writer-reader relations. The method used is qualitative with in depth discourse analysis techniques. The results of the study show that CNN Indonesia tends to position the victim passively by emphasizing the chronology of events without presenting narratives from the victim or his famiy. On the contrary, the perpetrator is given space to defend himself whitch can shift the focus from justice for the victim to justification of the perpetrator. From the writer reader’s perspective, the media forms public opinion through narratives that arouse empathy for victim, but still open up opportunities for speculation regarding the legal status of the perpetrator. This study concludes that the media still tends to represent women as the weaker party in cases of sexual violence, without sufficiently highlighting the perspective of the victim. Therefore, it is important for the media to present a more balanced narrative by including the victim’s perspective as well as the social and cultural context behind sexual violence.
