Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of internal and external factors on the social media habits of TikTok among students of the Communication Studies Program at Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya, class of 2021-2022. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, the research explores how personal motivation, emotional needs, and personal gratification (internal factors) as well as social environment, accessibility, and media algorithms (external factors) affect students' TikTok usage habits. The research findings show that internal factors contribute 54%, while external factors account for 46%. Internal factors include frequency of use (41.43%, low category), duration of use (50%, medium category), and attention to message content (47.83%, low category). Meanwhile, external factors include curiosity about trends (49.38%, low category) and fulfillment of information needs (60.80%, medium category). These results indicate that students' social media habits are more influenced by personal preferences, although they are complemented by the influence of the social environment. This study supports the Uses and Gratifications theory, which emphasizes the importance of individual needs in media usage, as well as the Social Cognitive theory, which explains the influence of the social environment on behavior formation. The findings provide insights into the balance between internal and external factors in shaping social media habits, particularly on the TikTok platform. Students' TikTok social media habits are influenced by the interaction between individual needs and social pressures. This research contributes theoretically to the development of digital communication studies and practically in encouraging more mindful and productive use of social media among students. Educational institutions are also expected to enhance students' digital literacy through programs that support healthy and responsible social media use.
