Abstract

Problem solving ability is one of the important skills that distinguish generations. This study aims to determine whether there are differences in problem solving between the Baby Boomers Generation and Generation Z. The Baby Boomers generation, which relies more on experience and traditional approaches compared to Generation Z, which tends to be innovative and adaptive to technology, affects the way they solve problems. This study involved 78 respondents, consisting of 32 Baby Boomers and 46 Generation Z subjects, with accidental sampling technique. The measurement tool used in this study is a problem-solving scale, presented in the form of a questionnaire based on the Likert Scale, which encompasses five key aspects of problem-solving: IDEAL; Identify the Problem, Define the Problem, Explore Alternatives, Act on the Solution, and Look Back (reflection and evaluation of results). The data analysis method used was the Mann-Whitney U Test because the data did not meet the assumption of homogenity. The research results indicate a significant difference in problem-solving abilities between Baby Boomers and Generation Z. Baby Boomers, who tend to rely on experience and traditional approaches, demonstrate higher problem-solving capabilities. They are more systematic, meticulous, and cautious in analyzing and evaluating problems, making them effective in situations requiring thorough planning and tested solutions. Generation Z, on the other hand, is more adaptive to technology and creative in exploring alternative solutions. However, Generation Z's quick and practical approach sometimes lacks depth in analyzing complex issues. This shows that while Generation Z excels in innovation and speed, Baby Boomers have an advantage in stability and reliability, especially in situations that demand deep understanding and long-term solutions.
