Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of self-control as a mediator variable in the relationship between moral disengagement and motor vehicle drivers' compliance with traffic regulations. Moral disengagement refers to cognitive mechanisms that allow individuals to justify unethical behavior that can result in low levels of compliance with applicable rules. Self-control as an individual's ability to regulate emotions, thoughts and behavior can be expected to reduce the influence of negative moral disengagement on compliance. Data was collected through distributing goggle forms using a Likert scale. The subjects of this research consisted of 300 respondents with a sample collection technique using snowball sampling. In this study, the path analysis method used was mediation analysis which was used to test the hypothesis and the results proved that self-control significantly mediates the relationship between moral disengagement and compliance. This individuals with high levels of moral disengagement tend to show low levels of compliance, but this effect is weakened when the individual has high self-control. These findings suggest that increasing self-control abilities can be an effective strategy to reduce the negative impact of moral disengagement on compliance with traffic rules. This study contributes to the literature related to traffic psychology and provides practical importance for improving driving safety.
