Abstract
Natural disasters such as forest fires and earthquakes have significant impacts on human life, infrastructure, and the environment, particularly in Indonesia, which is prone to disasters due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire. However, monitoring disasters in remote areas, such as mountainous regions and areas with limited internet infrastructure, remains a challenge. Internet of Things (IoT) technology offers a potential solution, particularly through the use of LoRa, a low-power, long-range radio frequency communication technology that enables sensor data transmission without internet connectivity. This research developed a LoRa-based prototype system for fire and earthquake detection using two nodes (LoRa Senders), each equipped with sensors to detect temperature, fire, vibration, and tilt. Testing was conducted under LOS (Line of Sight) and NLOS (Non-Line of Sight) conditions to analyze LoRa communication performance. In LOS conditions, communication reached up to 600 meters with a throughput of 40 bps, an average delay of 3.24 seconds, and no packet loss. In NLOS conditions, the maximum distance was 400 meters with a throughput of 18 bps, delays up to 7.49 seconds, and no packet loss. The results demonstrate that LoRa is efficient and highly effective for long-distance communication in open areas but experiences significant performance degradation in obstructed environments, such as rural or urban areas. This study is expected to support and serve as a reference for disaster mitigation in hard-to-reach areas, providing early information to communities in disaster-prone regions using LoRa technology.
