Abstract

The phenomenon of narrow beauty standards in Indonesia, such as slim bodies and bright skin, creates social pressure for women to meet unrealistic expectations. The media and patriarchal culture reinforce this construction, which often leads to body shaming and low self-esteem.This research aims to examine how the deconstruction of the ideal female body image is portrayed in the film Gendut Siapa Takut?!, directed by Pritagita Arianegara. This research focuses on the scenes and narrative depicting the main character, Moza Aphrodite (played by Marshanda), a plus-sized woman who remains confident despite facing social pressures and stereotypes related to beauty standards. The analysis was conducted using Jacques Derrida's deconstruction theory and Roland Barthes' semiotic method to explore the deeper meanings of visual signs and symbols in the film. The research results show that this film successfully dismantles traditional beauty stereotypes by emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance and body diversity. Through the story and visuals that support the theme of body positivity, this film conveys an inclusive message that beauty is not limited to certain physical standards, but lies in character, personality, and self-appreciation. This research provides new insights into understanding how popular media, such as films, can be a tool to combat narrow beauty standards and support more inclusive social movements.
