Abstract

Morality plays a fundamental role in shaping behavior, worldviews, and the social values of society. Sacrifice frequently emerges in media narratives, portraying characters who give up their time, energy, personal interests, or even lives for a greater good. In films and drama series, moral messages are often conveyed implicitly. The drama series Prison Break has significantly influenced the formation of social and moral values in society. This American drama series tells the story of Michael Scofield, a man attempting to save his brother, Lincoln Burrows, from a death sentence for a crime he did not commit. The series is filled with action, tension, and plot twists. The first season premiered on FOX Television, a U.S. channel, in 2005. Although Prison Break ended several years ago, its relevance remains high as it continues to be widely viewed on streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu. The series explores moral themes like personal sacrifice, making it highly pertinent to contemporary social challenges. Consequently, Prison Break incorporates themes that resonate with and are relatable to modern audiences, who may face similar struggles or challenges. In an era where media exerts significant influence over public opinion and social behavior, it is crucial to understand how moral messages in series like Prison Break affect viewers. This study analyzes the representation of the moral message of sacrifice in Prison Break. The researcher employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The method used is Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis to examine the representation of moral messages in the drama series. The study aims to explore the symbols and meanings embedded in Prison Break as the object of research through semiotic analysis. The findings reveal eight signs of a sibling's sacrifice for their brother through scenes in Prison Break. The representation of a sibling's sacrifice in Prison Break highlights themes of familial love, moral responsibility, and profound personal sacrifice, ultimately forming the core narrative that shapes Michael's journey as a tragic yet deeply dedicated protagonist.
