Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of social sensitivity as a mediator in the relationship between loneliness and social media addiction among students living away from home. The study involved 187 participants who met the criteria of being students studying in Surabaya. Data analysis was conducted using mediation analysis techniques with SmartPLS 4 software. The results showed that loneliness had a positive and significant effect on social media addiction, with β = 0.894 and p = 0.000, meaning that the higher the level of loneliness, the higher the level of social media addiction. Loneliness had a negative and significant effect on social sensitivity, with β = -0.550 and p = 0.000. However, social sensitivity did not mediate the relationship between loneliness and social media addiction, as evidenced by the indirect effect value of -0.017 (p = 0.452). On the other hand, social sensitivity had a very weak positive effect on social media addiction, with β = 0.030 and p = 0.431. These findings suggest that loneliness has a more dominant effect on social media addiction compared to social sensitivity, and also confirm that social sensitivity does not play a mediating role in this relationship.
