Abstract

Urban students are individuals who pursue higher education outside their home region to get a better education and opportunities to develop academically and socially. Urban life also presents challenges, one of which is homesickness, which can affect mental health and motivation to learn. Coping strategies are important for urban students to manage this pressure, with the right strategy urban students can more easily adapt and maintain well-being while migrating. This research uses a comparative quantitative method. The purpose of this study is to reveal whether or not there are differences in homesickness in urban students in terms of the coping strategies used. Respondents in this study were urban students studying in Surabaya class of 2023 as many as 125 people. This study uses a homesickness scale measuring instrument with instruments compiled by researchers based on homesickness indicators from Archer (1998) and a coping strategy scale based on coping strategy indicators from Lazarus and Folkman (1984). The results showed that there was a very significant difference between homesickness in terms of coping strategies. This study also revealed that urban students who used emotion focused coping strategies had lower homesickness compared to students who used problem focused coping.
