Abstract

Student academic motivation is a crucial issue in education, both in Indonesia and globally. Challenges such as low learning environment support, suboptimal time management, and the negative influence of online game addiction are significant obstacles. The impact of technological development and internet penetration has been shown to decrease motivation to learn, reduce study time, and weaken students' social interaction skills. In addition, student learning engagement often faces obstacles such as low active participation, lack of interaction between lecturers and students, and unproductive use of technology. This study aims to determine whether learning engagement as an intervening variable in the relationship between online game addiction and academic motivation in college students. This study is a quantitative study using the correlational method. The population in this study was 304 students with an error rate of 10% on the Issac and Michael table. The technique of taking these participants using purposive sampling technique, Measurement of learning engagement scale using a modified scale from Abbasi researchers, et al (2023) which refers to the theory of Fredricks figures, et al (2004). Measurement of online game addiction scale using a scale from Lemmens, et al (2009). Measurement of academic motivation scale using a scale from Vallerand, et al (1992). Learning engagement is able to strengthen the relationship between online game addiction and academic motivation, this variable does not function as a significant mediator. The results of this study indicate that online game addiction has a direct negative influence on students' academic motivation, where high levels of addiction are associated with lower academic motivation, regardless of learning engagement.
