Abstract

Games are generally considered a male activity due to technological limitations that are considered not designed for women. In this digital era, the understanding of gender equality should be growing, but in the world of e-sports, there is discrimination aimed at women. This study wants to explore how this discrimination occurs through the research subject of The International 2024's latest Dota 2 e-sports competition. The researcher uses a qualitative approach with the netnography method and is seen from the perspective of critical theory. Researchers observed videos and live chat columns on Twitch that broadcast the match. The result is that discrimination committed by viewers on live chat is carried out in the form of digital sexual harassment, body shaming, and hate speech where this is a way to silence women's voices. This action aims to strengthen male dominance by creating an environment that makes women reluctant to speak or appear professional. Discrimination from organizations is carried out in the form of structures that create gender inequality through the division of labour; Women's talents are limited and placed in less crucial matches, and control over women's representation for profit. Although it received various kinds of discrimination from the audience. Women continue to show their professionalism as Dota 2 e-sports talents are described with positive comments by the audience. The support and nature of professionalism is an effort by women to break through the ruling class, namely the organizing organization.
